It's no secret that WordPress has taken the web world by storm. A quick Google search of the phrase "WordPress is awesome" yields 113 million results. Awesome is an understatement considering WordPress runs 22 out of 100 new websites in the US, and currently holds nearly 54% of the CMS market share.

This easy use, SEO power-packed, and customizable platform is a must for any small business owner. The only problem? Hackers have latched on to this amazingly powerful tool to take advantage of those trying to move their business forward.

We've noticed in our 14 years of web development, that there's a lot of information on how to build WordPress websites online, but not much on how to protect WordPress. So we've developed "WordPress Security for Small Business Owners" to help safeguard sites from permanent data loss, expensive security audits, damage to online reputation, and battles with hackers.

This ebook was designed to help a normal person protect their website. It's not written to impress other techno-nerds with our extensive knowledge of jargon. It's instead broken up into 3 phases, so readers can protect their websites depending on their own personal needs.

The first phase consists of securing the foundation.

Topics Covered
- Hardening WordPress Authentication
- Moving wp-config.php file
- Scheduling Regular Backups
- Performing Updates and Upgrades

The second phase covers preventative maintenance.

Topics Covered
- Eliminating Spam Comments
- Limiting Login Attempts
- File Monitoring

The third phase, although it may be a sensitive subject, is for those who have already been hacked.

Topics Covered
- Checking Machine & Changing Passwords
- Removing Infected Files
- Reinstating the Latest Clean Site Version
- Performing and Testing Security Measures

And as a bonus, we've added in a section that address extreme security needs. This section covers how to password protect the admin directory, and how to modify the content directory.

Most of the security suggestions are useful, but the methods and descriptions about them were thin or missing (no info about changing SALT in wp-config, but it's on the checklist). And the author offered only a few plugins or solutions when there are hundreds of security and backup plugins available for WordPress.

Plugins like Better WP Security or Wordfence offer builtin tools to accomplish virtually all (and more) of what's suggested to secure a site. And something like BackWPUp will do scheduled backups to cloud storage services of the database and data files all at once. (Some hosting services do not offer automated backups.) It seems the author isn't aware of other solutions.

I have found more complete info from free WP security checklist PDFs I've found online. Seems to me this was kept a little vague so that readers would utilize the promoted services.

WordPress Security For Small Business Owners Your Guide To Website Security Mike Linville eBook Reviews

Small business owners have a LOT of roles, and a lot of the time "webmaster" is one of those. When my sister started her own vintage furniture rental business earlier this year, because I had a little bit of graphic design experience and an art degree, I got to build her a WordPress website. (Yippee.) After hearing about so many major companies got hacked, I knew that we could be vulnerable as well. Lots of time business owners don't realize that your website is just as much of an asset as other elements of your business (in my sister's case victorian couches and antique trunks) so website maintenance, especially security setups, often gets overlooked.

Shortly after I ran through this program and installed all the recommend plugins, we got a notification that someone had 20 failed login attempts on our site! Thank goodness I had our site protected against that. I can't imagine what would've happened if someone got in to our site. It would've been a major headache for us, not to mention a total time zap. ( We have parties to plan, people!)

I'd recommend this book because
- Language isn't super techie, even this web muggle understood it. Holla at a glossary!
- As easy go though as WordPress itself (that's why we all picked WordPress to build our sites on, right?)
- I learned even more about why it's important to protect against hacking! I didn't know search engines could blacklist a hacked site! Half of our marketing efforts are focused on SEO, and that could all go down the drain!

BONUS There is a follow-up set of videos you can buy for more in-depth info, I'm a total visual person (see above art degree...) so walking through with the screen view during the videos made me feel like a downright web genius.
The book is a great resource for security on Wordpress and also does it very quick without having to be a long and boring. Truly worth getting to make sure your Wordpress site is as safe as possible.
